Poker Bluffing Techniques

Bluffing in poker has always been a key ingredient to the game. The ability to keep your opponents guarded or cautious about your intended play, is extremely useful, and can increase your frequency of winning hands. The keys to bluffing are to determine whether your opponents are bluffing, to be aware of reasons to bluff, and to be aware of reasons not to bluff.

How do you determine if your opponents are bluffing during the course of a poker game? Certainly, understanding the process, is key to maximizing your gains. Some of the reasons another player may bluff including the following:

1) With only 2 players left in a hand, it is usually easier to fool just one person, as opposed to many;
2) If pot odds are in an opponent's favor, you can expect an increase chance of a bluff;
3) If an opponent comments on the superiority of their hand and he bets, chances are that a bluff is occurring;
4) If an opponent wagers after the Flop, but checks after the Turn, there is a pretty good chance that your opponent is bluffing;
5) If the Flop does not have any draws, this is a scenario where a bluff can be expected;
6) If an opponent bets after both the Flop and the Turn, but decides to check on the River, there is a good chance that a bluff is occurring.

When is a good time to bluff in Poker? Of course, the element of surprise is always a good reason to consider bluffing, but the following scenarios offer especially good times to consider deceiving your opponents:

1) Consider bluffing early in a hand against tight players that tend to fold quickly;
2) If you are in a hand late in a game, and all other players have checked, it may be a good time to consider bluffing;
3) If the Flop is fairly poor, it may be a good time to consider bluffing;
4) Your chances for bluffing success increase, when only a few players are left in a pot, as opposed to many;
5) If you bet pre-flop, and don't have a good hand after the Flop, you may consider bluffing since your opponents are not aware of the fact that you are not doing well post-flop;
6) Another great time to consider deceiving your opponents, is when there is a pair on the Flop, and it is less than dual 8's. The rationale here is that odds may be with you that opponents folded already that have low cards;
7) If you are known to be a shrewd poker player, your reputation may be enough to scare people when you stay in a hand;
8) If you are in the Small or Big blind, and all others have folded by the time the play has reached you, this may offer a great time to bluff.

Just as there are good times to bluff, there are excellent reasons why you should not bluff. Some of these are outlined below:

1) If you have recently been caught with your pants down bluffing, then you should consider not bluffing;
2) If at all possible, avoid bluffing, when your opponents would expect you to bluff;
3) Avoid bluffing against inexperienced players. As much as novices enjoy bluffing, nothing gives them more pleasure than trying to catch a bluffer in action;
4) Avoid bluffing like the plague, when there are lots of players still remaining in a hand, as the odds of one of them being able to beat you is great;
5) Avoid bluffing against a Flop that looks strong. In this scenario, the odds are great that you will get beaten at your own game;
6) Although this may seem to go against a reason to bluff, consider not bluffing if you are at a blind position, since other players may believe that you are bluffing due to your position at the table;
7) If you lose a real tough hand or sequence of hands, do not consider bluffing. In this scenario, your opponents may feel a desperation motive on your part, so it is probably not a good idea to stretch the truth in this instance.

In summary, the aforementioned techniques can certainly be used to enhance your poker game. The judicious use of bluffing and non-bluffing can dramatically increase your winnings over the long haul.

Dirty Poker Tricks, Techniques, and Tactics

In the game of poker, some players make up for lack of skill with dirty poker tricks intended to break the concentration of other players during critical parts of the game. The pressure is on when you are face to face with other players to perform well, or lose your hard earned money and walk away from the table with nothing. When you add in the tricks used by many of these uncouth players, the pressure can often be hard to bear. By learning about these tricks now, hopefully you will be better equipped to handle them when confronted with them around the poker table. There are many legal ways to help your odds of winning, playing the correct cards, learning pot odds, and betting are all very important skills. Unfortunately, many players choose not to master these skills, instead focusing on mind manipulation of other players to win their games.

We will discuss three of these so called mind tricks that are often used in poker games. They all take quite a bit of time to perfect, but once perfected can be extremely effective. Players who are able to perfect all of these techniques can be very formidable at the poker tables, without really having a lot of skill at the actual game itself.

The pause is one of the riskiest tactics to use, but when used at the right time can bring down even the most seasoned players. Players who use this are the ones who seem to take a really long time to make any decisions. Most players use this too often or at the wrong time and it becomes obvious what they are doing. If you just sit there staring at your cards or other players, it will be a definite cue that you are just blowing time. Most players get by with this trick by counting their chips, checking hole cards, etc. It is important to appear confused, asking the dealer questions will help with this illusion. It will make you appear to be thinking, instead of just blowing time to throw other players off their games. This trick is designed to keep everyone guessing as to what you are doing. You want them to spend their energy trying to figure out what cards you are holding, etc.

Another of these tricks used quite frequently is called the stare. It is commonly known that when something captures a person's interest, or excites them, their pupils dilate. So many players will stare at other players to look for this effect, thus enabling them to know if they are bluffing or what sort of cards they have in their hand. Many experienced players will wear shades when they play to prevent this from being used on them. The only bad side of this trick for the user is that it would be very hard to use this on more than one player at once. For this trick to work to its full potential, it has to be used from the moment the cards are dealt until the player either folds or the game ends. If this technique doesn't afford you any other help, at the very least it will make the other player very uncomfortable, which will affect their decisions and how effectively they play the game.

Many players are masters at distraction. The point of this is to make other players uncomfortable, which in turn will effect their concentration and performance. You try to distract them during key points in the game, when the need for concentration is at its highest. This sometimes is done by asking questions or making noises at crucial times to take a players mind off what they are doing or planning to do. Some players will ask what time it is, burp, laugh, cough, or just chatting in general. Talking to other players will often be the best source of distraction, because even if it is directed at another player, most people will still listen to what is being said. This is the least obvious way to perform this trick as it is human nature to listen to conversations that go on around us. If the other players seem to get angry at this trick, it means it is working. The angrier they become, the more off their game will be, therefore increasing your odds at winning that much more. Masters at this skill are often able to make a whole table of players lose their concentration and impact their games.

All of these are very effective but dirty tricks. The hard part is learning when to use them and on what players. If you use them and it becomes obvious, most of the effect will be lost. Players will warn other players of your tactics and they will be prepared for you. For some players, mastering these tricks of mind control has helped them to win several games they otherwise would not have won based on skill alone.

Advanced Betting Techniques in Texas Hold'Em Poker - Part 3 of 3

Winning poker comes down to being able to squeeze a profit out of marginal situations. The object is not to win every hand played, but to win every hand you play. The best way to do this is to out bet your opponents. Every bet made should have a purpose. Either it is made to induce a weaker hand to fold, or it is made to maximize the winnings on the hand.

Since there are many opportunities to outplay your opponents, you have to know which opponents you can outplay. It is difficult to finesse weak players. The slow play often backfires because one of the loose limpers will hit a hand. The bluff does not work, since these players call with any two cards. The following sections demonstrate many of the advanced aspects of the game and how best to play them.

Selective Aggression

Showing selective aggression by taking the lead in betting can win many pots. This is true from early position or after other players check to you in middle or late position. A strong raise under the gun from a tight player usually represents a strong hand, as does a re-raise from late position. One can use these bets to increase the pot size with a strong hand or to take down the pot with a semi-bluff when holding a big drawing hand.

Fallacy of Pot Commitment

Many poker advocates espouse that at a certain point in a betting round the amount of chips you have already put in the pot requires that all of your remaining chips should follow. Sometimes, even if the pot or implied odds warrant an All In bet, it is not the right move. If you put your opponent on a hand that you feel you cannot beat, fold- no matter how many chips you have invested-so you may live on to fight another day (or at least another hand).

Learning to Let Go

Never become so married to a hand that you cannot lay it down. You have to pay attention to the community cards as they fall. You have to watch the betting patterns of the players and see how they correspond to previous hands. Most players use a slow play at one time or another. Due to this, a premium starting hand can fall to a better one. They also fall to limpers or big blinds that hit miracle flops or mediocre hands that improve tremendously on the flop.

The majority of the money you lose does not come from folding pre-flop hands that hit big. Instead, it comes from keeping the second-best hand and paying off the best hand at the river. Getting married to a hand that was initially strong is a critical error when playing Hold'em. There is an old adage in 7-Card Stud that says you should fold as soon as your hand is not the best on the table. In Hold'em, unlike 7-Stud, you cannot see what cards the other players have, so it is not possible to fold as soon as you are beat. You can try to avoid having the second-best hand by folding hands that may lose pre-flop. If someone in early position puts in a strong raise, fold that Qs-Jh or low pair. You can reasonably assume the raiser is holding Ace-King, Ace-Queen, King-Ten or now has a high pair.

You should throw your hand away the minute you know you cannot win. To continue to call or raise because your hand was very strong early is highly unprofitable. Constantly watch the board and modify your decision to hold or fold as each new card appears and as each player reacts to the board with their actions or inactions. If you cannot learn to let go-even those pocket Aces-you can lose a large number of chips over the course of a gaming session or during a tournament.

When you are not sure where you stand with your hand, it is alright to fold. Even if your opponent is known as a blind stealer or often bluffs, keeping a weak hand is never the right move. Continuing on when you are not sure you have the best hand is often costly, in both chips and emotions. Of course, if you are planning to bluff, keep the hand and attack if you sense weakness.

Putting on the Brakes

One thing that is important to winning poker is recognizing when to put on the brakes. No-limit poker is all about aggression, but not knowing when to exercise caution is costly. The betting strategies above are when, at each street, you feel you have the dominant hand. Trying to gauge the strength of another player's hand with a check or a call is the correct play when you are no longer confident of having top hand. The check is also an inexpensive move when changing gears or altering your table image.

Do Not Get Greedy

If you have strong hand, keep watching the board for flush and straight draws and, if noted, put on the brakes. A pocket pair of Eights or Kc-Qc loses value with Ks-8s-Qh-10c-6s on the board. Flopping a set or two pair is hard to lay down, so just limiting your desire to raise and re-raise or go All In can save many chips if your opponent hits.

Being a Table Bully

There is a difference between getting greedy and over-betting your hand and purposely controlling the action when you have a larger stack. This is most common in tournament play, where players develop large-stacks of chips, but is also prevalent in no-limit ring games. Any time your stack is larger than the other players at the table, you can become a table bully. The purpose is to use your chip stack to force other players out of a hand with the threat of their losing it all. This is an effective way to steal blinds and force medium to good hands to fold without challenging your hand.

5 Techniques To Win At Online Poker

The internet is overwhelmed with online poker tips, many of which do not actually improve your chances of making money from online poker. The 5 techniques in this article are used by professionals, and should be in every poker player's arsenal.

1. Start tight

When you first enter an online poker tournament, you have no information on your opponents. By starting the tournament slowly (only playing premium hands), you give yourself time to judge which players are loose, tight, aggressive and passive. Gaining this information will help you make decisions later on in the tournament. Because the blind levels start as a small percentage of your stack, there's no point risking your chips on a mediocre hand. If you're serious about making money from online poker, and not just playing it as a hobby, writing down notes about opponent's play-style is a necessity.

2. Play at the right level

Never play in a tournament where the buy in is more than you can afford to lose. If your decision-making ability is hindered by you being 'scared' of losing your money then you're playing in a too high-staked tournament.

3. Use all information available to you

Although you cannot spot physical tells in online poker, there are still several 'computerised tells' which you can utilise. These include:

- How quickly your opponents act

- Your opponents betting patterns

- What your opponent says in the chat box

- Which cards your opponents 'showdown' with

4. Mid-game play: tight/aggressive

This should be your 'bread and butter' poker strategy. Tight poker means you're very selective with your hand, only raising with Queens, Kings, Aces or Ace King, and only limping in with smaller pocket pairs. Aggressive poker is where, once you're involved in a hand, you're there to win the pot. Even if you don't connect on the flop, you need to make a continuation bet. As you've been playing tightly, players will give you a lot of credibility.

5. Know when to play loose

Playing loose definitely has a place in online poker tournaments. The best time to start playing more hands is towards the cut off for paid positions. If a tournament pay the top 10 places, when there are 20 players left everyone starts to fold more and more - wanting to make the money. This is the time to start stealing blinds, you should never play poker to 'make the money', the top 3 positions earn a huge percentage of the overall prize pool, and that's where you want to end up!
